    C1 Oil Canister Restoration

I need to get my canister silk screened. I know Paragon will do it for $120 but is there anyone else that can do this for a more reasonable amount ? My canister is original and freshly painted gloss black but Paragon told me their silk sccreening will not stick unless it is stripped and either powder coated or e-coated. I thought powder coating has only been in use about 30 years, so how did GM do it ?

I was thinking of buying a decal and scanning so I can use my computer to change the white font to black to create a silk screen using a light bulb and photo sensitive screen like they use to do T-shirts. Has anyone ever tried this approach ?

Anyone doing silk screen on a spray painted canister for a reasonable amount ?

I had mine powder coated through Paragon a long time ago. It was painted by me prior to sending it to Richard so a painted canister should not be a problem. They did not do the powder coating there but sent it to someone.

By the way, I know did not pay more than 20 bucks to have it done.

    Hope this helps.

I second Ken at Orindales. He did the one for my 63 and did a beautiful job. Also a teriffic guy to talk with.

I just spoke with him and I need to check my housing to make sure I have the correct "M" bolt instead of the incorrect "AMP" bolt used from which was used from mid-1964 and later. If I have the right bolt he will charge $95 (which includes shipping) to repaint it using a paint that is OK up to 500F which is what is what is sold in hardware stores for painting barbecues. He will then apply the painted label using a stencil and then shoot clear on it. He also puts a groove on the bolt and installs a snap ring to make the unit serviceable if the copper washer leaks. Not much savings from Paragon's $120 restoration but I am hoping he will come down a bit since my canister has been stripped and painted. He was very helpful and seems to be a real nice guy.

Is the "M", or "AMP bolt a headmark, right on the top of the head bolt? I just checked a NOS canister I have, that I know to have been originally purchased in the late 1960s / early1970s era, and I don't see a head mark. Ridge.

About 2 years ago Ken charged $65 as I recall for my 63. A complete restoration. Nice!

Ridge - I thought he said the markings were on the bolt head. He also said he does not know where to find new bolts with the correct head markings so he usually finds them on old canisters on EBAY or swap meets to get the bolts.

I'll look at mine tonight and post a picture if it has the markings.

Ken has done about a half dozen cannisters for me, great work, reasonable $$.

Here are pictures of mine. I will ask Ken where he thinks my canister came from. The bolt looks pretty unique and has been factory "staked" too retain the bolt, copper washer, spring. Perhaps it is a passenger car canister.

I hear that judges aren't looking for the bolt head markings and just focus on a painted label vs a decal. I probably will use it as is and just get the label painted on it.

I'm sure NCRS will update the 1958-60 JG sooner or later and at that point, a requirement for the M bolt will probably be added, since I imagine the TDB will be used for some of the source material...

I showed Ken the photos posted on this TDB and he said my canister could have been off of any GM car, truck, etc. Ridge's NOS canister was probably purchased by someone over the counter, probably in the 70's.

Ken is going to try to locate a correct bolt and then he will restore mine.
