    Cubic Inch Calculation Table

Does a table exist anywhere that shows the Bore and Stroke and resultant Cubic Inches for production and non-production small block displacements? I am interested in the Bore and Stroke combinations for 331, 339 and other displacements. I could always get out my calculator but if it exists------

    Thanks!

    Try this link.

This script determines the displacement of the engine by two methods; selecting the engine to get the geometry of the configuration, or by the geometry to get the engine.

A Google search for engine displacement calculator turned up several others.

That's an excellent site for online calculators.

The list of their automotive calulators/converters is here:

and I commonly use their compression ratio calculator:

This calculator is designed to show the different Compression Ratios for different sized engines.

Thanks! These are very helpful and save a bunch of time instead of using calculator or slip stick (yes, I still have a couple).

Anyone know bore and stroke for a 337 CI and 331 CI? Both based on 283 block.

        Thanks!

          Steve,

Trying to wring 331 inches out of an old 283 block may be a bit difficult. The most common combination for 331's and 337's was a 327 block (4.030" or 4.060" bore) and a 327 crankshaft with a longer 3.25" stroke.

Old 283 blocks can usually be bored from their 3 7/8" size to the 4" of a 327 but going beyond that is a risk. Even 4.0" is pushing it a bit for long life and durability. Most old 283" were fine at .060" over though.
If you add the 3.25" stroke crankshaft, you come up with a 327 at 4" bore and 331-337 with 4.03" and 4.06" stroke.

          A 283 block, bored .060" with a 3.25 stroke 327 crankshaft gives you 322.654 cubic inches.

Thanks Michael! I have been trying to figure out how the Scarabs andother 50's sports racers got 331-339 out of the '58 283 blocks.

            Thanks!

In the 50's, it was more popular to use an aftermarket "stroker crank" that added a lot of cubic inches. (especially since there were no 327 crankshafts at that time)

An old 283, bored to 4" with a custom 3 3/8" stroke crank comes out to 339 inches. That was a somewhat common engine in the late 50's.
Betcha Clem built a few of those.

THANKS!!!!!! Now I know. I guess they called Hank the Crank and others for the strokers.

steve: call dean at cresap machine, 1 301 724 8794. he has the ability to make over 330 ci out of an old 548 casting and yet keeping the bore at 060 like mike hanson recommends(and i agree).he'll probably be a lot more reasonable than the california crankshaft manufactureres. mike

Is he sneakin 350 cranks into those old blocks? It is possible.

Hey, by the way, I heard they're gunna be checkin cubic inches at the next event Mike.

Thanks Mike! I have an extra seasoned block in the garage. Hummmm

I recall back in a 60's rod mag that a guy bored a small block into the water jackets and sleeved the block, don't remerber the bore/stroke, but it ended with 471 CI. and he installed it on motorcycle.
