    Starter clip

Did 1970 Corvette starters have those round clips that hold the wire harness? My assembly manual doesn't show it.

    Thank,

Are you talking about the spring clip on the solenoid with a clasp for the battery wire bundle? If so, yes, 1970 Corvettes were so-equipped.

With the solenoid heat shield on the BB starter seeing or feeling for that harness retainer is a lost cause.

Hey Mike -- a BB station wagon sounds like a fun family truckster.

Yes and no...illustration in the AIM...

You'll find the clip called out in UPC 12 (electrical wiring) and not in UPC 6 (engine). The engine section simply shows the starter & solenoid being bolted into place on the engine without being electrically connected.

In UPC 12, the engine harness gets hooked up and that's where the wire retaining clip is called out. When you flip to the back of the AIM where optional engines are called out, they only depict critical differences, so there's no mention of the wire retaining clip on the starter solenoid because it's already called out in the base car section of the AIM...

Thanks all for the helpful replies. The next time I happen to be "casually fooling around under the car" I'll install one. The stuff around the starter and solenoid is so close to each other already!

Jack, your reply reflects exactly what I was told over a year ago by the people that rebuild my alternators and starters. I forwarded your reply to them. That clears up some mysteries. Thanks to you and the others for your help and suggestions on the starter and clip.

You can't just "snap" the clip onto the solenoid. There are "loops" on either end of the clip and they will not fit through the space between the starter and the solenoid. So, at a minimum, you have to remove the starter brace to get the clip on.

                    Re: Starter clip

Thanks, Joe. I read that part 'at a minimum' and figured "Oh, no. Nothing on that car has been at a minimum." Oh, well. I may have to remove the starter anyway this Texas Winter to get that shorter solenoid spring installed.
Our Winters here are usually about three months long and pretty much mild. I believe our average high temperature in the Winter is in the 50s. We often wear shorts and T-shirts at Christmas.

                      Hi Scott,
I think the clip actually addresses your point about things being 'close' down in that area. The clip 'neatens' things up a bit.
Having hands the size of a 3 year old helps too.
                      Regards,
                      Alan

                        Re: Starter clip

Thanks, Alan. You are right.....before I settled on my mechanic the one thing required on their "resumes" was the size of their hands. Those areas like behind the dash and in the engine compartment do require small hands.

My alternator repair people tell me to bring in the whole starter. If it's just the solenoid spring why not just bring in just the solenoid? I think they're into S&M.
