    Carb gasket

Is a 73 LS4 supposed to have a gasket between the carburetor and air cleaner assembly? If so what material and thickness is correct?
It's the original Carter built Quadrajet 7043200 March 1973

Yes, it is supposed to have a gasket. It was originally GM #3969843. It is a cellulosic fiber ("paper") gasket about 3/32" thick. I think that most were dark brown material but some may have been gray. I doubt that GM had a color spec on the material for a gasket like this.

The 3969843 was discontinued more than 25 years ago and replaced by GM #25511809 which remains available as a functional replacement. Dr. Rebuild sells and excellent reproduction of the original gasket.

      Re: Carb gasket

My observation of original cars leads me to believe the original carb to air cleaner gaskets for both Rochester and Holley equipped 1970-72 Corvettes were dark brown, however I have to offer the usual disclaimer -- that is I have not seen ALL Corvettes built for 1970-1972.

And then there is the point that you asked about a 1973.

        Bill,

My 71 LS5 quadrajet has a brown paper like gasket as Terry describes.

How'd you get that Top Flight, the judges missed it?

Just wanted to say I'm jealous of the motor, my 74 LS4 looks nothing like that. Very nice!

Would you be able to send me a picture of you air cleaner ring. I have not seen a proper LS4 ring.
            Thanks

You can tell a LS4 air cleaner ring easy. A 350 ring is on center. The lip that holds the hood seal is the same size all the way around. That top lip on a 454 is offset and is about one inch off center so one side is lots smaller than the other.

No, I lost my 2 points, that's why I was asking

Don't have any of the ring itself

That picture shows the ring in front on the top that has almost no ledge in front and an inch or more in the back the way a 454 ring should be. Did they have other items on the air cleaner listed for the two point deduction?

No, carb and air cleaner were perfect except for missing gasket.

Obtaining and installing the gasket is rather simple, so you should be able to correct this deficiency without problem. The next thing I'd do is obtain and install the AIR system. That had to be a much bigger loss of points. However, re-installing that will be a lot more difficult and expensive.

The white air filter on the hose from the valve cover looks like it may not be an original part. It is very white and may not have the logo A/C on the bottom or the staple but it's hard to tell in the picture.
