57 trunk lock

Is the lock escutcheon supposed to be flush against the lid surface? My lock hole has notches that fit the lock, escutcheon doesn't fit flat, it sticks out about 1/16".

I have a problem then, the hole in the trunk isn't big enough for the escutcheon to fit in and be flush. The hole is notched the same way the cylinder lock is notched. Should I cut the hole bigger? The picture shows the notches & the hole being too small for the escutcheon to fit flush. What do you think I should do?
