    '61 Resistor Voltage

On a '61, 230 HP, what should the voltage be on each side of the ballast resistor? I assume it is 12v on the battery side, but what about the other side?

    Re: '61 Resistor Voltage

With the engine off, you'll see slightly more than 12 Volts on the hot side of the ballast resistor.

What you'll see on the coil side will depend on whether the distributor points are open or closed:

Points open, you'll see slightly more than 12 Volts.

Points closed, you'll something in the 6 Volt to maybe 8 Volt range.

That's why the wiper motor wire is on the 12V side , other 8 or 9 volt or the points burn

        '61 Coil Voltage

What should the voltage be on either side of the Coil with the engine off and switch on?

Assuming the coil is properly connected:

The (+) terminal will measure the same as the "coil" end of the ballast resistor.

The (-) terminal will be at + 12 Volts with the points open and 0 Volts with the points closed.
