    C2 gas filler neck sealant?

Have had a 'dribble' from my 64 gas tank when filling to top of tank. Checked and sure enough it is leaking from the base of the filler neck. I ordered a new gasket but I'm wondering if there is a 'sealant' I should also use with the new gasket. Checked archives and couldn't find a reference to the sealant if used. Thanks in advance!

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

Dan -- Also, the '65 AIM show no sealant; just the cork gasket. Mind you, the "screw assemblies" for the neck-to-tank connection have a plastic (?) gasket that will help.

Installed a new gasket on my '65 convertible a few months ago, and I used a light coat of Permatex 'Ultra Black' gasket glue, only on the tank side of the gasket, more to hold it in place if I ever have to remove the tank again (as I don't think one can get it out with the neck still on).

Haven't filled it up to check though.

      Wayne -

You don't have to remove the filler neck to get a convertible tank out, but you do on a coupe.

I love cork-----the feel of it, the look of it, the smell of it. I'd probably even like the taste of it if I were to eat any. However, I don't like it for the filler neck gasket. It tends to "dry out", displace, and leak over time. I used a sheet of buna-n gasket material about 3/32" thick to make my own gasket. "Bullet-proof".

Thanks Joe, is the buna-n material available at Napa? Are there seals on the screws also? Been a long time since I had one apart! My old 63 started leaking but I just put another cork job on it! (in 1986)

It's been a long time since I did this. However, I think I had to go to an industrial supply vendor to get the buna-n material. I doubt that you'd find it in an auto parts store.

There are integral seals on the screws and I suggest replacing these screws. They are GM #3767804 and remain available.
