    65 Jack Hold Down Spring

    Howdy boys and girls

At the 2007 Regional in Las Vegas my fuel car (build Feb 8, 1965, St. Louis) received a few dings from some pretty knowledgeable judges. One of the dings was for my jack hold down spring. The unit in my car is a tired looking "double hook". The point off was because the judge felt that my car and its mid-65 build date should have a single hook.

My other 65 is a November 22, 1964 AOS built car. It is an all original southern california car and it has a single hook hold down spring.

This past weekend I was reviewing my judging sheets for the fuel car as I begin to prepare for the Duntov. I noticed in Noland Adams that the double hook hold down spring was introduced in October 1964. Wouldn't it be logical then that by Feb 65 the double hook would have been well into production??

I would like to hear from some of the more experienced 65 guys out there regarding this subject.

    Thanks!

When I started to have my car judged in 2002 I had a single hook spring which I was told by judges was incorrect and at the time the JM called for a double hook. I went out and got a double. Since that time we have a newer JM which now calls for a single hook for all of 65. I have no idea when it changed. I am sure someone will know why and when the change was made.

There was an in depth discussion here on this topic several months ago. I think it was decided that the single hook spring also appears in early 66 cars. My unrestored Nov 65 built 66 has what I believe to be the original single hook spring.

My car was built in May and is an AO Smith Car. It has a single hook and is without doubt never been replaced. This car is original and has not been restored.

That's one of the problems with Noland Adams as a reference... His book is VERY old information, some of which is quite good.

But, his text typically recites facts from GM's drawing system (AIM date this/that) which ignores the issues of what on-hand inventory was in the plant to support production. Now, to be fair to Noland, he DOES back up his his text with owner survey data. But, that's NOT on ALL running changes...

I have a June 11 65 coupe which has a double hook. It appears to be original to the car.

Here is a 26,xxx original mile 1965 Duntov/Bowtie car, serial #17,6xx that I photographed extensively and that the '08 NCRS National Convention. It has a single hook spring as seen in the pictures.

'65 #23561 has a double hook, and will NOT be changed to conform to whatever version of the JG exists. It was purchased as a storage yard derelict and there is no reason to believe it was "changed for judging" or any other reason. Can NCRS not imagine an assembly line with 2 boxes of holddowns on hand and Charlie's "mission" is to install one?

Yup, I think that was the opinion of most here when we last discussed this hook some time ago.
