1965 396/Air Battery Box Bolts & Washers

During the installation of the battery box on a 65 396 we noticed that the kit contains bolts with captured washers and also larger washers. We are debating whether the larger washers are correct. There are some shown in the AIM, but we've seen a low mile Duntov car with only the captured washers...no larger washers. If you have any information about what is the correct installation it would be greatly appreciated!

John, i viewed my 65/396 and those thick washers are in place and have the same part number for those used in 63 as well. I measured one, od dia is 1" and the thickness measures .0125. My 63 measures the same as well.
I talked to you at the National Convention John about a starter assembly fo this Corvette and failed to get back with you on a time frame of completing of. We talked about the need of a solenoid as well. Please let me know your intentions.

Bolt and washer configuration should be the same as an AC car as a reference. I ended up putting the large washers on my 396.

hi on my 396 car the battery tray bolts have no captured washer and use a large washer 1/8 thick 15/16" in diamiter bolts are 5/16" NF 3/4 long and self threading ,the bolts have a recessed head with a D in the middle I could post a pic later if required . Don

hi john sorry to be so late with the pic's but this is my origional battery tray outer bracket welded to a new tray , hopfully you can clearly see the outline of the large washer on the bracket .. when i removed the bracket from the frame there were 5 of the 6 bolts still there and i beleive them to be origional .. i did not mention before that also on the head marking there are three circuler rings arround the D on the head ,good luck Don ..

Check out your digital camera's owners manual. Somewhere, I'm pretty sure, you'll find there's either a button to press or a configuration menu entry to invoke to put the camera into 'macro' mode. Once you do that, your closeups will be crisp/clear at the expense of shooting pix with normal distances to the subject...

Don -- here's one of the bolts on my early '65 air car; those on my late 396 look the same (without removing to check; the inboard two are easy to see). Same D headmark in circles; indented hex 1/2" head on a 5/16" - 24 bolt (fine thread). Thick washer is 1.0" dia. by 1/8" thk.

I did, but that was a wrong number. It was 27-20 in Long Islands catalog. Thats the one I have, and I was knocked for it being wrong . Supposed to have some "triangular " cut outs, I was told. Thanks for the trouble. FRED
