    David,
I could be wrong, but approximately 45 degrees makes some sense in that when you use a key you only turn it about the same. Also, when you use interior lock, you only need turn it about the same as well.

At least that's the way mine is. Please let me know what you find. Wish I was closer to swing by and give you a hand....

Come on over. We are only 2800 miles apart. I am beginning to think that a few different combinations will work on these locks. I received some more pictures that showed the passenger side tab facing forward. I will let you know how it all turns out. Such fun.

2800? According to my GPS it's a mere 2795.4 miles

I figure you've taken your lock(s) out, but have you tried to re-install? I mean with that spring loaded clip on the inside is a bear and takes some patience and a few choosen words.

If you don't mind, can you forward those 'other' pictures to me OR post em up here for future possible reference?

        Thanks,
        David

yes I have tried to install the locks and I can't get them to lock. Still puzzled by the 45 degree rotation. Does the cylinder then return to the verticle position when locked? I will try to post the pictures provided by Dave Barclay. You guys have been super with your replies. I haven't "played with the locks in the last few days as I am putting new brakes on another of my cars.

More fun stuff on the door lock caper. Here is another picture of two new door locks. It is apparent that from this picture the tabs on both sides face the front of the car as Dave Barclay stated. Now to install the locks and play with them until they work.

              David,
I would suspect that the difference might be whether or not you are installing the key teeth down or up. I believe mine are installed in such a manner that mine work with the teeth down. I'd be curious if David Barclay's he puts the key in teeth up or down? If he also does key teeth down, then I might suspect that they are just installed on the wrong sides. See,.....I assume mine are correct. But I certainly could be wrong. I'll play some more tomorrow and post any new findings.
Regarding the 45 degree, i'll try to figure out an answer and post results for that as well, but it's getting late here and I'm to wiped to try playing this evening.....

                David,
David B's comment stated his key teeth are facing down. Am I ever going to be having some fun loaded with all of this hot ammo. Thanks for your help David. It is always appreciated.

                  David,
Well it turns out I have a slight problem as well. The pictures I sent were of the Passenger side door lock. Turns out that side I have to insert the key teeth up. On the drivers side it's teeth down. I have not pulled the drivers side panel to see the relationship with the lock.

I just never remember using the key to lock the passenger side. I always lock it from the inside and if I do use the key to lock it up, I always just use the drivers side. Another good catch.

So it looks like David B's is actually correct. I will try to pull the drivers side panel just to determine what the hey is what but it'll probably be early next week. Bt the looks of mine, the need to be cleaned and lubed a bit anyways....

                  Have a great weekend,
                  David

Re: To Joe Lucia etal need help with door locks

                    Problem solved!
Many thanks to David Duell and David Barclay. Without your help I would have been bald. Now for the details.

My biggest clue was David Barclay saying that the key comes back to vertical when locking the car. My locks would not do that. The key came out in the horizontal position. They are not the right locks for the car even though they are a GM lock.

I found that the amount of freeplay as determined by the tabs and the E fastener was critical in getting the lock to want to function at all.

Anyway, I bought a new set of locks that return to vertical after locking the door.

They have enough freeplay to allow it to work and to key cannot be removed when in the horizontal position. Maybe mine were worn beyond functionality..who knows.
                    Thanks guys!!
                    David
