    Mobil Delvac rebate

Back in March-April Mobil had a $3/gal. rebate on Delvac, and I bought four gallons (15W-40 CJ-4) at Walmart for $9.12 per gallon plus sales tax.

I was beginning to wonder if the check would show up , but got it today. (Gee, that will buy about 2.7 gallons of regular unleaded in Southern California. )

The first couple of gallons I bought in early April had a yellow sticker announcing the rebate in effect from 3/1 to 4/30/08. I bought two gallons then and two more just before the rebate deal ended at the end of April. These jugs did not have the yellow rebate offer sticker, but it was still in effect on the date of purchase, so I got the additional six bucks.

Keep an eye out for rebate offers on C-category oil when you visit an auto parts or big box store and let us know.

The API service categories listed on the API "donut" are CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4, CF-2/SM. That pretty much filled up the space in the donut, so there was a line of API service categories listed below the donut as follows:

    CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4, CH-4, CF-2, CF/SM, SL,

followed by more lines of non-API categories - ACEA E8 and E7 (for you guys "down under" and "across the pond"), and a bunch of manufacturer's specifications from Cat, Cummins, Mercedes, Detroit Diesel, Mack, and Volvo.

Wow! That's quite a mouthful. This stuff will work for my vintage Corvette, my vintage superbike, my big rig, my farm tractor, my yacht with the dual 6-71 Jimmys, and my vintage EMD GP9 locomotive - everything except for my new C6 and my P-51 and F-86.

If you read The Corvette Restorer, you now know there is no need to be confused by all the additional service categories.

The one that really counts is the first listed, and if it's CJ-4 or CI-4, it's the best oil for your vintage Corvette that money can buy!

No, my GP9 has the four-stack "liberated exhaust" that some railroad (I forgot which) popularized on the old 567 engine. It's the equivalent of 2.5 inch manifolds and pipes on vintage Corvettes.

(I still think a Roots scavenged, 16-cylinder 567 revving up from idle to Run 8 is one of the best engine sounds of all time!)

There is a great article on motor oils by Duke in the new Restorer.

          Duke;

It's even more fun with a 12 cylinder 567 or 645. That's one you can feel and hear the vibration in the car body. They finally redesigned the crank a few years before I left changing the firing order. I believe that was primarily for the Turbo 12 so it would be more acceptable for commuter service.

Oh! To keep this on topic; an 8-cylinder 567 will not fit into a Vette, contrary to an unpopular misconception.

Neither will this MTU twin-turbo V-20 diesel (12,500hp, 18,000 ft-lbs. of torque), but it DOES have lots of chrome valve covers .

You yankin' our chain or did you really buy a C6 (Corvette, that is) and not tell us?

Nah, I didn't buy a C6 but the F-86 sure is neat - exceeds Mach 1 in a dive and pulls 6g turns!!!

                Chuck Yeager

P.S. Two good vintage F-86 movies on DVD:

"Jet Pilot", John Wayne, Janet Leigh (filmed circa 1950, not released until 1957)
"The Hunters", Robert Mitchum, Robert Wagner, May Britt, 1957

Yeager did some of the flying for one or both.
