65 tire that will fit in my spare tire area ?

Anyone know where I can find - hopefully in So Cal - a tire that will fit in my spare tire location ? I have a 195/70-15 in there now and it won't allow the door to close all the way. I guess a could go to Paragon or others, but if anyone has other options I'd like to hear them.

    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
Try the longer front hinge bolts for the lid like those originally intended for the redline option for the '67's.
And/or a 60 series tire or 50, you have options.

Sorry to disagree, but you do NOT want a wider tire.

Mark, if you looking for a radial size - am using a 185x65 R16 with the longer bolts as Mike pointed out. Closes to within 1/4 of an inch. So far in the last ten years of the '64 as a driver it's not been a problem with road dirt, etc. Gary....

          I used a P185 60 R15, fits perfectly in the tub

If you're looking for a radial tire and don't care if the wheel is stock, try a T155/90/D16 mini spare (donut spare). They are used on newer GM S10 pickups and Blazers. Fits in the well, bolts up nicely, and is the same diameter as a 205/75/15 radial. Should be cheap ($10-$20) at your local auto recycling center.
