    '60 Powerglide Removal

    Hi,

I need to rebuild the CI PG on my '60, and it would be cheaper for me to remove it rather than having the trans shop do it. I've done an aluminum PG removal on a '64, but that had a nice flat bottom for the trans to sit on the trans jack and use chains to hold it all together.

Wanted to know if anyone out there has removed one of these before and if they have any recommendations on the overall process (e.g., rrecommend removing exhaust pipes, best way to hold back of engine up) and specific recommendations on how to best utilize the trans jack (I'll be doing this on a 2-post lift) to hold the trans for removal?

Always good to hear from someone who has done this before.

    Cheers!
    Garry

First using the starter motor turn the flywheel and remove the three bolts then push the torque converter back.

You need only to lower the engine till the PG tail housing just clears the cross X frame so remove the dist cap, then reach the upper bolts and remove them from the PG spacer plate . Lift the vett go to a rental yard and get a trans jack that will reach the PG on your lift, the PG only needs to move off the engine (I inch) to lower it

Have you considered pulling the engine and transmission as a unit?

Thanks Roy. If I read you right, I would do the following:
        1) Remove Torque-to-Flywheel bolts
        2) Remove Distributor and any other parts that would hit firewall when letting back of trans tilt down to clear X frame
        3) Remove upper bolts attaching spacer plate to engine
        4) Lift car, support trans w/jack, remove trans support bracket
        5) Remove remaining bolts attaching spacer place to engine
        6) Lower rear of trans to clear X frame
        7) Support rear of engine at this point
        8) Guide trans back from engine to release it

I assume I would also have to remove all connecting linkages along with the shifter (step 1A). Yes?

Any idea just how much these CI units weigh?

          Hi Edward,

I have no need to take them both out at this time. My '60 is a nice driver, and after a recent 600 Mile road tour, it became clear that the transmission needs to be gone over. After long trips (100mi or so), the trans surges when I come to a complete stop, and you will see fluid leaking out under the spacer plate, enough to make a small puddle.

The transmission is painted blue, so in talking with some people it looks like it might have been rebuilt by AAMCO at some point prior to my purchase (would make it over 11 years ago).

Yes you got it,it must weigh 200 lb. Or more , that's the only problem working on it. What's wrong with it ? it's simple to rebuild I put a Video to gather many years ago 15 showing how to rebuild one . Even today it may cost you about $100 in parts to rebuild , Dan Chuck sells my PG video for chevy guys.

The filter may be needing cleaning or bands adjusted

                Hey Roy,

Danchuk no longer lists/has your CI PG video (I called them just to make sure). Is there another supplier?
