1971 Big Block Engine Mount Gap????

    Hi All

There is a gap between the chassis horn and the engine mount on my 1971, 454, LS5, 4-Sp.

The new engine mounts are the same as the old ones i took off, but there is a gap of about 1/8 between each side of the mount when the bolts are tight, if a tighten the bolt up so the spacers that a welded on the inside to the engine mount are hard against the horn it will buckle the engine mount.

The old engine mounts look like they were tightened so the spacers would be hard against the horn and tightening the bolt has bent the sides of the engine mount in till the spacers have touched the chassis horn.

    QUESTION

Is this gap normal????, do i tighten the bolt up till it's tight and then stop, or do i keep tightening the bolt till the spacers touch the horn????

    Kind Regards

    Greg...

The aftermarket/repop ones are a little to big.

I had the same isssue going back when I was doing my resto.
The only way I could fix this was to use NOS GM ones. They have a spacer welded on each side and fit exact.

You could make a spacer and insert it between the mount and the frame on each side. Just paint them black and they will blend in.

IMHO - it is not a good idea to compress the mounts so they are buckled.

You can find the NOS ones on ebay - set is running around $200 or check the monthly newsletter for NCRS.

      Hope this helps ...
