I had the "hot stop..." problem with my 396 when hot and I think it may be from fuel vaporization in the carb. As long as you are driving and consuming fuel it seems ok, but sit at a traffic light for 5 minutes and it dies or runs ruff as you try to accelerate - once it is going again the engine runs fine. I am going to try a thermal insulating carb gasket.

I replaced it with a reproduction coil. I also found particles of dirt in the rear needle/seat and replaced the fuel filter as well after going through the carb. However, today I started the car and when hot it responded the same as before, fouling out sounding as if it was running on 7 cylinders or out of time. Previously, I had used a NOS fuel filter and I think it passed debris to the carb but replaced it as I have said. Still dies when hot at a stop and misses at low rpm's across the intersection.

I did this many years ago on a 396, so I don't remember the details of why, but I installed a heat shield under the intake manifold to keep hot oil off the manifold, wired open the heat riser valve, and used stainless shims to block the heat riser passages between the manifold and heads.

My Plug of choice is Autolite #65. Had all of the above problems with AC and stopped using them about 5 years ago and no problems.

Well after going through everything else, I found the culprit, I had upgraded my T.I. ignition to the one sold in the Drivelne in Feb. It seems, that it failed and caused my problems of stalling at stop when engine is warm and fouling at low rpms. It progressively got worse and worse until engine got no spark and wouldn't fire. The T.I. unit that is sold from Lectric Limited is one that I have heard of no problems with.

Very interesting. I had thought the two solid state units were actually the same by different vendors, but it is good to know there is a difference.

Yes, I agree, that IS very interesting. I'm curious about the source of these boards though. I installed a new board from TIspecialty a few years ago and it has performed flawlessly. (I'll comment on how well it worls later)
Is this the same board that would have come from LectricLimited or do the TI Specialty boards come from a different source?

if you are referring to the ones with the brass colred frame that are potted and you can not see the components. i have tested some that were not working.

                    Clem,

How does one test a normal ti module and/or the solid state one?

I'd like to learn more about these things.

I think that's the one Clem. I do remember that the components are not visible. (sealed in black goonk) Just found the instruction sheets and it was made by M&H electronics in Calif.

There are at least two manufacturers of these modules.

                              (Farmer) Dick,

Do you know if the M&H distributed by LL is the same as Dave Fiedler's? My impression was that they are the same (but that came from a vendor trying to sell me one). From the sound of things, the one causing the original poster issues is the more recently advertised on from a different manufacturer (who is unknown to me other than the name of the vendor advertising them; it is possible the vendor actually makes them).

                              Thanks

I am not sure who the two (or more) manufacturer's actually are. But I am sure that there are at least two. I have seen them side by side.
