    Knock Outs ?

Trying again for a top flight - while reviewing my last judging sheet I found the following comment under the "Mirrors & Door Handles" lines in the Exterior Section for my '65:

Door Handles, key lock bezel & gasket: No gasket on left & right key lock. No knock outs.

What is meant by no knock outs ? Are they speaking of the keys ? If so, is it a simple fix of punching out the knock outs on the keys ? The keys I have were purchased from Jesser at Carlisle two years ago. Supposed to be the correct key blanks.

    Thanks in advance

I think you should have ask the judges but appears to be an incorrect statement with what you have said if you bought keys with knockouts.

As Lyle states, if your keys have knockouts still in place, either the judges forgot to ask to see them or you forgot to correct them when they took off the point.

If you don't have knockouts, then you're supposed to have them.

Noel Sounds lilke the judges missed the fact the knock outs are still in the keys. Better you should point that out to them the next time you have your car judged.

          Noel,
not only are the "Knock-outs" to remain in place in the keys, they should have the key codes stamped on them as well.
The hole for the key chain should be 9/64th's, not the smaller hole that seems to be so prevalent with current replacements.

65's don't use gaskets between the lock cylinders and the door surface - only the stainless escutcheons.

              Key hole size

              Mike,

In the survey I did with Pete Lindahl in 2005 on key ring, key holes size, we found that 7% (out of a sample size of more than 200 keys) of what we were told were original keys for 1953-1967 cars had the small key hole. Based on these data, I don't see how a judge could deduct for having a small hole on a key for a '65. Having said that, if I had a choice of a key with a small hole or one with a large hole for a '65 I would take the large hole key.

                Hi Gary, nice article.
I don't remember seeing a reference in your article, but, the large hole keys are also illustrated in the C-2 owners manuals.
