    1953-1962 Gas Cap

    Hello All,
Are 1953-1962 gas caps all the same? I have seen a few advertised as NOS that state 1953-1962 are the same, the ones with the four ears. Is this correct? Any information would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Anthony

FUNCTIONALLY, I think they were the same. However, there were at least SIX different caps used over the 53-62 period.

I thought there was a difference over the years as far as vented versus non-vented, too. However, the 1962 cap, GM #3814436, which I believe is a vented cap, was also used to SERVICE all 1953-61. So, I figured I was wrong about vented versus non-vented.

53-57 I pic'ed was a vented gas cap later the gas tanks were vented not really needing a vented cap.

Some where I had it that three styles of non-vented have been used...Part Number 3751027 is believed to be the Fuller Emerson cap, the Standt and Eaton caps may have been used in earlier cars???

'56 thru mid-'57 tanks weren't vented, and used vented caps. Mid-'57 thru '62 tanks were vented, and used non-vented caps. Photos below show the Fuller-Emerson non-vented cap, the new reproduction Stant non-vented cap, and the '56-'57E Eaton vented cap.

The non-vented cap was introduced concurrently in production with the mid-season change to the vented tank, and the TSB that instructed the dealers how to convert a non-vented tank to add the soldered-on vent nipple in the field also told them to discard the existing cap and replace it with the new non-vented cap.

I'm learning every day Thanks for the info

In 54 there was a call back to correct water leaking into the cab area by drilling a hole at each door rubber gutter and adding a brass tube so as to drain the water under the body. Also adding a rubber patch at the door front area.
