Largest gathering of 1971 LS6 Corvettes...

Just returned from the spring ChevyVette Fest show in Chicago, Ill. A special LS6 showcase was the featured marque of this show. Five '71 LS6 Corvettes had their own special display, along with the '70 LS6 Chevelle crowd and their display.

The '71 LS6 Corvettes were a Sunflower Yellow coupe, M22, MA6, 3:55, black interior. Ontario Orange coupe, M22, MA6, 3:36, saddle vinyl interior. Steel Cities grey coupe, M22, MA6, 4:11, black vinyl interior. Classic White convertible, M22, MA6, 3:08, saddle custom interior. Mille Miglia Red convertible, M21, 3:36, black vinyl interior.

This was the first and largest gathering, for these special cars! A unique Chevy VetteFest banner was produced to promote the special hi-performance 454 engines from Chevrolet, and a awesome 24" x 36" color poster of the LS6 Corvettes was produced. This display generated a lot of interest among the advanced Chevrolet collectors and enthusiasts!

Well that is so special, those cars just get over looked all the time by the motoring press. It is so wonderful that those special Chevrolet high performance 454 truck engines got a day in the sun light. The 350 LT-1 just gets way to much write up in all the magazines in my opinion. I just love the sound of a solid lifter 454 engine in a corvette.

          Bernie,

No, these are all known cars. I believe 4 of the owners are NCRS members. Two of the cars I believe will be at Bloomington Gold, going thru the judging process, as they are new owners to these cars.

We are now at 96 known/verified LS6 Corvettes in the survey/registry. I spoke with several people who had at one time one of these cars and probably have a lead on about 3 or 4 additional cars to include in the survey, as a result of this display at this show.

We are now at 50 coupes and 46 convertibles.

Some folks think that an engine has to have high compression to sound good. As I've said quite a few times before, that's nonsense. The 1971 LS-6 had 9:1 compression and sounds as good or better than any 1963-70 mechanical lifter Corvette with 11:1 compression.

Why did Chevy offer the LS6 only in Chevelles for 1970? It's odd that their most potent engine wasn't offered in Corvette.

                    Great question Mark.

Im relatively new to the hobby. Has there been any definitive writings regarding the LS-6??

                    thanks

The LS7 engine was initially slated for production with the 1970 model corvette. It was basically an second design L88/ZL1 with the additional cubic inches but the motor never saw the light of day. Don't know why they didn't use an LS6 though but I feel that the 71 LS6 in the corvette is a better motor than the 70 LS6 used in the Chevelles. The Corvette motor used the aluminum open chamber heads from the L88/ZL1 but used the same pistons as the 70 LS6 which lowered the compression to 9 to 1. The additional breathing from the better heads more than made up the difference in compression. The more streamlined exhaust manifolds that Corvettes used vs. what Chevelles used helped at bit as well. This also helps explains the high cost of the 71 LS6 option. I remember seeing an article where they dynoed both motors and the 71 version put out more hp.

Yes, I remember the story about the cancelled LS7 in 1970. I just wonder why Chevy's "plan B" in case that didn't work out (which it didn't) wasn't to use the LS6.

The original poster of this thread is very knowledgeable with these cars however there are others as well. The 70/72 team leader is very passionate about these cars as well.
