    '62 Carb Rebuild

Several months ago I read a thread about where to have carbs rebuilt. I was almost ready to box mine up and ship it to one of the recommended shops when I heard about "The Carb Shop" in Costa Mesa, CA.

I dropped it off and less than a week later I had it on my doorstep. I put it on and presto - ran like CRAP! I returned it and again it was returned within a week. I put it on again and presto - ran like CRAP!

Today, I drove the car (barely) to a shop (BC Carbs) in East Los Angeles. I waited (you have to know the neighborhood to understand why I waited) while they tore it apart and fixed it.

    They found:
    1. Choke linkage backwards - choke would not open completely.
    2. Primary floats too high - flooding.
    3. Internal gasket backwards - restricting internal airflow.

These are the things I saw while I watched them go over the entire carb. God only knows if there were other things wrong.

They installed it on the car, adjusted the mixture & idle and off I went.

    Total cost - $100.

    Live and learn.

I would have a serious talk to whoever told you about the Carb Shop. It's always a good idea to talk to people (several) before using a place not endorsed by many.

      Thanks for the advice.

I also notified the credit card company that I'm disputing the charge and sent a letter to the merchant documenting the deficiencies in his work.

I'm happy I did this work during the winter months where, even in So. Cal., the driving is reduced this time of the year.

Now all I have to do now is replace the shifter boot, wash & wax the car, fill the tank, put down the top and enjoy.

You've just learned why there's a difference between the 'mass merchandizer' carb shop and the 'pro' shops (Dick Katter, Jerry Luck, Bob Kuntz) with recognized reputations AND either an in-house flow bench or 'mule' engine to actually run the carbs they overhaul and grade their own report cards before shipping!

Most shops simply disassemble, fix as required (to some level or another), optionally make the surface cosmetics 'pretty' again, throw in an overhaul kit, button 'er up and let the customer grade their report cards with a return-to-factory warranty.

That does NOT get it. Especially, if the carb's going to an NCRS customer overseas!!!!
