I was recently removing some undercoating and discovered a blue and white decal imbedded beneath the surface of my spare tire carrier. It reads something like "Rockwell Automotive Plastics" and has the number "74-2." What concerns me is that I have never seen nor heard about these; however, I must admit I have never spent a lot of time studying spare tire carriers. I can't seem to find anything in the JM. Any input?

These have been seen on a fair number of original spare tire tubs. Their being present is the exception rather than the rule, but there's been more than a few of these found. Rockwell was the original supplier to GM for these tubs as well as many other Corvette fiberglass body components. I don't think that any knowledgeable judge would question the authenticity.
Some folks might infer that the "74-2" represents a date and might assume it to mean February, 1974. However, it could just as easily denote the 74th day of 1972. Or, it might have nothing, at all, to do with a date code.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Snoop around the inside of your fenders and quarters. You might see that same sticker there too !Tom Hendricks

Re: '72 spare tire carrier decal
As posted above, here is a picture of the decal/label found in the rear wheel well of my 72. Looks like it has 49810 stamped on it and 43 71 printed on it. The car has a Nov 11 71 build date. Hope this helps.

Re: '72 spare tire carrier decal
Yep, those Rockwell labels, embedded in the fiberglass, are pretty well known. My '71 has them visible in the spare tire tub, the front nose panel, the fenders, Etc. The XX number prior to the year can't be month/day or the Julian day of the year as that interpretation makes no sense based on the build dates of various cars I've seen them on. The rational interpretation is the sequence represents the week of the year that panel went through the press mold....- Top
