    Re: 70LT-1 shielding

Mike you mentioned in your post that you have replaced all the parts in the picture with NOS parts. The distributor cover you have shown in the the picture was not used on the 70 LT-1. The distributor cover shown is what came on later year model 1970 Corvettes that used the dual snorkel air cleaner that did not have the open element air cleaner like the LT-1. As I understand it, the 70 LT-1 used the open element air cleaner and the two piece distributor cover throughout the 70's LT-1 model year.

Disreguard this post, my error as posted by Terry, late model year LT-1's did use the later design distributor chrome cover. Thanks Terry.

      Jim,
Later 1970 LT1s, just like the other Corvettes built later in the 1970 model year, had the pictured distributor shield. That smaller shield had to do with the ignition points and the introduction of the RFI shield inside the distributor -- with the points shielded internally the larger external shield was not needed. Of course 1970 and 1971 LT1s had no points, so in reality the shield only had to protect from radio noise generated in the distributor cap. The small shield worked well for that.

The right side support is no longer available from GM.

Also, there should be a total of FOUR spark plug heat shields as others have noted. Please post a better picture of the 3 shields that you took off. I'm interested in seeing their configuration.

Excellent! Thanks. The shields are as I would expect them to be. There's an interesting story regarding these shields that I'll describe when I get around to it.

if the early cars had 3 of these and the later had 4, is it possible that since this is one of the first cars to get this setup if not the first, it could have only had these 3? i have 4 new ones to put on the car but i was just curious.

I'd say it's a definite possibility IF the missing shield was in the left front position.
