    Re: Vibration during acceleration

    Tim,
    I had the same vibration in my 69. It turned out to be the rear transmission bushing and driveshaft yoke. Check there for excess wear and play. Did you pull the yoke to have a look when you reversed the driveshaft?

      Thanks for the input folks. Yes, I have tried disconnecting the fan belt which gets the water pump, alternator, fan, etc. I haven't tried disconnecting the power steering pump however.

      I have inspected the drive shaft yoke, but my problem exists sitting in the driveway with the clutch in or out with trans in neutral. The drive shaft and rear yoke aren't spinning. Only the engine itself, flywheel, and pressure plate are spinning.

        Hey Tim,Have you ever checked the bolt on the harmonic balancer.I understand the crank didn't come tapped from the factory but i gotta believe most are drilled and tapped by now.diz

          Tim, sorry to read about your vibration problem. Stan sugested motor and trans mounts. Did you check them for cracking? If they are hard and cracked they should be replaced. A bad engine mount will cause vibration when you rev up quickly to 2000 to 3000 RPM. You have played with the clutch while the car is parked at 2200 RPM and you still feel the vibration. If your mounts are good, your problem, I hate too say this, a worn fly wheel pilot bushing. A new bushing should have been installed when the clutch was replaced, if not the transmission spline will vibrate. The speed of the engine makes the worn bushing rub against the spline tip and vibration will result along with tranny failure. If this is not the trouble, you might try jacking up the car and doing a run check with a lisening scope while the car is running in gear to pin point the vibration. A muffler shop might also be able to help you pin point the trouble. Pulling the trans and clutch again would not be something I would want to do again. Good Luck.

            Tim, I think Rich might be onto something re the clutch pilot bushing. I suffered with a similiar vibration problem on my '70 small block convertible. I recently removed the trans for a rebuild, and just pulled the clutch, flywheel and pilot bushing. My pilot bushing was EXTREMELY worn - to the point that it has about 1/8 inch play on the end of the trans input shaft.

            I haven't got it back together yet to let you know the difference, but its sure something to consider if you didn't check/replace the pilot bushing when you had your trans out. Good luck.

              Tim;

              Did you change the rear spring? I had a similar vibration problem with my 63, just about drove me nuts. it ended up being the new spring I installed(car sat too high) which changed the geometry of the rear half shafts.Put the old one back and vibration was gone.

                Hi Tim,
                I don't know if this would apply to your car. I have a 58 & it's a powerglide. While backing out of my driveway I felt the same type of vibration in reverse, I gave it a little more gas & it happened again. I thought it was the U-Joints. I took it to my guy & he said no, it was the Tranny. I added a link to the part that had broken in my transmission. I don't know how else I can post the picture. I was told that had my car been driven hard this part would have been under warranty. Here is the link I hope it can help you find out the problem. Good Luck.
