    numbers numbers

I'm always mentioning the word "design" meaning what a part looks like, like many here that post pic's to show others what a part looks like is what is great about this forum. Many people when buying parts depend on numbers , and that's great, but again if you don't know what the part should look like you can be wasting your money ( like to many repro's out there) These two Dist is a good example, both have the same # for a 55 Corvette but don't look the same so now we use the words (design and first, second or third )
Top one is dated 54 bottom 55 so we have a design difference or called a first design and second design, these words are seldom used. The word early-Mid-late are used more often but don't have the meaning of the word design. Using this word we know were talking fiscally the parts is made different.
So I use words like first and second but also the word design. I hope this makes some sense to people.

I agree. There are several things about 53 and 54 that are not in the judging book.....but are found on these cars. Body characterisitcs between the 53-55. As long as there is no mention of it in the JM, there will be people saying things that are not true. These statments will become common place and eventually the standard belief about these cars.

I had once gave consultation to a major corvette dealer. They had a 53 that had a later model conv top. No flipper molding provision. After they sent many pictures of the car, it was found that the entire car was a very late 54 body AND frame. The body mounts behind the seats are a major giveaway. Not to mention the 54 style frame with the holes still in place on the center "X" frame for the fuel and brake lines. These characteristics are not mentioned in the JM and need updated in this respect.

The major players know what is 53 acceptable and what is 54. It's easy to tell the differences. With these updates to the JM, it would help to educate others. This would help to weed out the incorrect representations of the cars.

The JM also states that 53's have a distinct roll under rear wheel ledge. I can document where not all original 53's have this. I can also document some early 54's that do have the rolled under wheel well. The JM needs updated in this respect.

Knowing the characteristics of the 53 cars will help to keep unscrupulous people from trying ot sell someone a 53 that is not what it seems. The fake #202 that was sold to a gentleman as a 53 was eventually sent back to the seller and all $$$ refunded, only with the help of the IN Attorney General's Office. As these cars become more valuable, more fake 53's will surface and the uneducated buyer will suffer.
