65 rear diff stamping ?????

my 65 diff has the following -----AU 6 4 65 ------ and nothing else the case was cast 04 of 65 ---- according to the by the #s book it should not have a 65 and it should have a W for warren and a E for eaton where the 65 which is correct ????? my stamping looks to be correct but ????? please help...

Donald,

In 1963/64 the rear is stamped like yours so I would say it's fine and probably made before the newer stamping with the W started.

In my experience I'd have to say this is fine, I'd like to check the casting date on the side of the pumpkin case & also the cover plate. They are usually hard to read. When I'm home later I'll dig for some pics, I'm sure I have some to compare.

Your stamp format looks good to me

Donald -- I don't believe the W and the E's that Colvin describes started before 1968 or later.

Here's the bottom stamp from a mid-67 BB (12800 VIN range).

And here's a link to the top edge code stamp, which you should also see on your 396 rear.
