Don,
I remembered when I installed new tie rod tubes and clamps on my ‘66 and I tightened the clamp bolts to the proper torque spec, I was still able to turn the tubes when grabbing and turning with two hands. So, I went back and tightened the clamp bolts some more. And this wasn’t a case of the clamps not being positioned far enough toward the tube ends to be properly clamping the slotted tube area. This experience also reminded me that when I bought original, used clamp bolts from a well-known supplier of used fasteners, all the tie rod clamp bolts were bent. It makes me think the torque spec doesn’t quite do the trick and whoever owned those tie rod clamp bolts before me also felt then need to tighten the life out of them.
