1963 Trailing Arm Shims Loose & One Missing

During my inspection of the rear suspension components, I noticed a missing shim on the outboard side of the passenger side trailing arm and the remaining two outboard shims are loose (inboard side shims still tight). The bushings on both arms need replacing as well (I have the bushings). I can only guess how difficult it is going to be in finding original shims (I didn't see anything repro that's close to correct). If anyone has some that they would be willing to part with (PM me) or know of other sources, please let me know (none of the repros I see are correct).

    Thanks,
    Fred

    Fred:

Are your TA shims the original OEM "slotted", or the "two-hole" ones used on most C2 cars. I assume the former, but confirm.

Bair's may be a good place to check. Also a search by GM part number on Ebay and internet.

Many folks used the C3 slotted shims and just call it "good enough". The C3 slotted shims are the easiest to install and work with.

Thanks Larry. Yep, mine are the original slotted ones. I will check with Bair's tomorrow - did notice that Davies Corvette Parts and Zip show a close repro that may have to do. I'm hoping I can install the shim(s) without any disassembly and get things tight enough to drive it to the shop to get the bushings installed and alignment done.

      Thanks,
      Fred

By the way, how the heck do you get to the nut to properly torque it to the 40-60lbs per the shop manual with the car on the ground?

          Fred:

You bring up a good question.

          1. I was not certain that my cadmium replated OEM bolt would take the full torque, so I stopped at round 35-40 ft lbs as best I remember. That was 20 years ago. But my 67 car also had the two-hole shims, and I knew that they could not fall out.

          2. I believe I jacked up each trailing arm to their "normal ride height" without the wheels in place. Used two jacks. Then torqued the bolts...........which were now much more accessible.

Ah, ok. Might try jacking up the arms as you described just to keep the existing shims in place well enough to drive it to the shop.

            Thanks.

Corvette Central advertises for OEM TA shims for 1963 cars. https://www.corvettecentral.com/c2-63-67/suspension/rear-control-trailing-arm/63-rear-trailing-control-arm-shims-set-correct-20-582097?srsltid=AfmBOortqivXOcTdh2ORfCp8ONMoXCl14iD u9zwN389bhouVJ6MMRe80

Using the slotted 69-82 shims should work to get you to the alignment shop. They are easy to source and install.
