What shocks are currently available to purchase that meet NCRS judging standards?

    Tracy,
see this previous thread, and post 10 in particular. No currently made shock exactly matches the old Pliacel shock, but the Monroe closely approximates it.. Leave black for early 64, or paint bluish grey if your car is later, Any point loss in judging will be very minimal.

Welcome to NCRS Tech Board and NCRS.

Pretty sure someone will jump in with a direct answer to your question.

When you get that answer, might be worthwhile to consider points gained/lost vs cost.

Shocks are judged for Originality and Condition. Originality for shocks judged under our CDCIF Matrix judging system. Considered are Configuration, Date, Completeness, Installation, and Finish. Configuration - how item is shaped, stampings. Date - Item manufactured BEFORE final assembly of car? Completeness - Is everything there? Installation - properly installed? Finish - Surface finish same as original?

Originality is judged first. Each CDCIF element is weighted at 20%. After Originality is judged, if at least 10% of points remain, then Condition is judged. Shocks are judged by "Chassis" team. Link below is to NCRS sample sheet for Chassis judging on Mid-Year cars. Shocks are part of Front and Rear Suspension #7 and #13.

On judging sheet you'll note 5 points Originality and 5 points Condition for both Front and Rear Shocks.

Note that there are 4500 points in Flight judging. If there were NO SHOCKS on your car you would loose 20 points (all Originality and all Condition points) -20 points out of 4500.

Any purchase options come with risks. Original, that is unrestored, shocks would receive no Originality deduction - they are original. But likely would get Condition deductions for wear, rust, aging, and/or damage. New shocks might differ from appearance of what originals looked like under CDCIF, but if at least 10% Originality points remained, would get all their Condition points. After all they are new.

Point of all this is, you can spend a lot of money for not a lot of points. Or, spend your money where it yields greatest point benefit.

      Again welcome.

      Dave

        Tracy,

I have the current available AC Delco gas charged shocks on my 1964 convertible. I scuffed them down and painted them the "correct" shade of gray. My car was built on January 18, 1964. I lost 2 points for originality for both the front and rear shocks as they were noted as a "Service Replacement" by the chassis judges at the 2014 NCRS National Convention.

        Hope this helps.

        James
