A good theory, but it is counter to the experience of several people who have their ‘66 L79s judged at recent Nationals and received deductions for the lack of one/both the circle/volcano on the rear bowl.

Thanks for real world application. Personally, I feel "judges knowledge" should work in favor of an owner.

How is an owner going to restore their car? Going to use criteria in applicable TIMJG, that's how. As a judge, if you "know" something not in the book - write that owner a note with no deductions. Don't penalize an owner for something TIMJG authors didn't think was real or didn't think was important.

Flip side, if "judges knowledge" has TIMJG in error, and owner restored to book, no deduction - write a note.

Judging should help owner - write a note on this "judges knowledge" stuff.

    Rant from peanut gallery! YMMV

      HI all,
I appreciate all of your input to my carburetor question. To say the least it has been a little bit of a challenge to find a good, documented answer. I've been silent for a bit while I waited for a response from the 1966 National Judging Chairman. After a couple of vacations and a couple of emails back and forth between us I think I have a good answer for all of us now.

So I don't get it wrong the following is what he wrote to me.

"There has been an ongoing discussion referring to the typical configuration of the 1966 67 Assembly sequence carb front and rear float bowls.
There has been numerous examples of different configurations from original in place examples that MAY or MAY NOT be TFP.
After discussing the validity of one VS the other, the 66 Team has decided to accept both configurations (with and without the volcano config)
until something definitive can be ascertained with objective data. That is the current policy. With that being said: The pics you have supplied of your float bowls will not receive a deduction for configuration moving forward."

In a follow-up email he clarified a question I had regarding this, and his partial response is as follows.

"There are no changes in policy in how the 66 bowl configuration will be evaluated moving forward.
The "call" made on your car that day was nothing more than "mistaken identity".
There is nothing in the 66 Manual (or any reference material that I am aware of) that states: that there is a "volcano" bowl configuration used in 1966 production carbs.
With that being said: the area/item will continue to be judged as the manual states and there is no revision or updated mandate needed
      or implied.
If ongoing research finds "new" information that is not currently stated in the 66 manual, that information will be disseminated."

After receiving this I have decided to leave my carburetor rear float bowl alone since both configurations should be accepted now and judged as is currently written in the '66 Manual. I'm bringing the car to Vegas in September for the Nationals so as long as no new definitive data comes out before that I think I'll be ok. Well, with this item at least but I'm sure there will other things I've missed.
