63 Fuel injection air cleaner mounting

    Hey guys,

The JM states "The air cleaner attachment parts are not installed until the air cleaner itself is installed." Is this referring to the S-tube and bellows as the "attachment parts"? Was the air cleaner canister installed before undercoating? If so, would the plate, screws and large fender washers all be undercoated inside the wheel well?

    Thanks!
    Todd

Todd, The attaching hardware inside the wheel well should not have any undercoating or blackout on them.

    Regards, Joe

        Don,

Yours appear to have some blackout or undercoating on them, which is not what Joe stated. Can you clarify?

Also, your "A" marked bolt heads are different from what I have. I looked in the AIM and the part # is 9417692 for these bolts. When I searched that part # I find in multiple places that these bolts are also for the spare tire, and marked TR or RBW. Do you know if there were all of these head markings used?

        Thanks,
        Todd

no undercoating at all.. Yes, there is black paint.. I suggest follow Joe's advice, and use your bolts if they have headmarks commonly seen on early mid-years, until proven to be not correct.. I don't know what all headmark bolts used were.. Good luck

My 64 has impressions of the retainer/washer into the under coat indicating the were installed after the under coating process. The common head marks I've seen are 'A' and also blank ones.

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

I agree with dan. when I restored our 65 FI roadster, with 19900 original miles that I bought in 1970, there was bare fiberglass under the rectangular plate and the individual fastener/washer below the rectangular plate. hence I believe the air cleaner assembly was installed BEFORE the blackout/undercoating was applied. mike mccagh

Sounds like Andy should research this further. ....At what point would the undercoating have been applied? At what point would the air cleaner assembly be applied?

Don, What does it look like under your bracket or washer? Undercoating or Bare fiberglass.

I agree with you Joe. It appears we are getting 63 and 64 responses here. Were they all the same, or did the process change from 63-64? Also, mine is a December 62 build, so was that changed throughout the 63 year as well?

For my Mar64 car; it is natural, ie NO undercoating. Recall this being study before, and still have that raw plate.
