I am getting ready to install the correct outer splash shield seals to my '65 coupe. I have verified from previous threads and discussions with other NCRS members that the staples were/are installed from the top side of the shield. My original right side shield appears to have had the staples installed from the top side of the shield based on the sharp metal material around the stamped holes on the bottom side. This is a C60 equipped car and has the original and correct block off plate spot welded to fill in the cut out since the battery is located on the driver's side, see attached picture. The my '65 has a body built by A.O. Smith on June 24.
At a 2021 NCRS Regional meet that I was a judging at, there was an unrestored 1965 coupe presented for flight judging by the original owner that had the staples installed from the bottom side up and the seal material with the three faint ribs present on the bottom side of the shield, see attached picture. The body was built on April 28 by A.O. Smith. A second picture of a '65 Bowtie coupe photographed at the 2008 Nat'l Convention with a St. Louis body built on May 14 also shows the same staple and seal installation orientation, see attached picture.
My question is this. Since the current 1965 TIMJG does not specify what the installed orientation of the staples and the three ribs on the seal material, what is the consensus as to the correct orientation that they should appear? Can I be reasonably sure that if I install the seals with the staples installed from the top side and the seal material ribs oriented on the bottom side of the splash shield that this would be judged as correct? I have a picture of the staple and seal orientation on two unrestored cars showing the installed orientation, so maybe it is a no brainer, but I only want to do this job once, and hopefully get it correct the first time.
I wouldn't be asking this question, but my father replaced the original seals back in the mid 1980's so I don't have anything to go by except that the shields are the originals.
Thanks,
James
