Gary Barrns, is there any update on your ink transfer decals? Are you going to be able to produce and sell them?

I am currently trying the silk screen kit, but with not much success. It really takes a certain touch to get the ink to flow evenly.

            Thanks,
            Don

Don, thanks for asking. I have received some very good feedback from my trial participants. I have made the minor changes and plan to offer them as soon as the printer can generate them. Because I can't sell these on the tech board, I will put a notice out to those on the tech board when I have them posted in the classified ads where I can sell them. Thanks again for your interest and it should not be long now. Garry

UPDATE- Don, I have recently restored several of these and have about half of them left. I take an original AC Delco PF-141 canister and strip the paint, disassemble it completely, replace all washers, replace all o-rings (I add an additional o-ring at the base of the bolt on the inside of the canister to further deter oil seepage) new copper crush washer, polish the bolt, repaint the canister with VHT epoxy semigloss and apply my new ink transfer (not a decal). I have also altered the bolt slightly so that a snap ring and washer can be added to aid in rebuilding if and when necessary. I have posted photos and details in the classifieds for sale section on this site.

Gary, I also found a place and had some ink transfer (not decals) made up. They work great and look great. The only negative is that the label on the ones I do with the silk screen kit are almost flat, i.e. not much raised above the surface. The ink transfers look really good, but the label is raised more. If you rub the surface with your finger, you can definitely tell the difference between a silk screened one and the transfer.

Don, I can't disagree with your comments about the slight thickness difference between a silkscreen and the in transfer graphics. I have been able to take some four 0000 steel wool and lightly go over the ink transfer to knock it down a bit. I showed my canister to several Master judges and even some National Team leaders and some liked the gloss and some like it flattened, but no comment on the ink thickness. I don't think the slight height difference will make much difference unless the judges want to begin to get under the car far enough to actually touch the canister which these days may be disallowed. My graphic is 100% correct and is ink and not paint, so it could be argued.

What graphic source did you use for your ink transfers?

I'm glad to hear you have tested yours with National level judges. I quit using the transfers I have because of the image thickness versus a silk screened image. I went back to trying the silk screening but quit after multiple failures. I have a few canisters that I have not finished. One that I did manage to get a fairly good silk screen image on. Like you, I found a source for good copper washers, the thin flat washer at the top of the spring and the rubber seal above the thin washer and under the filter support. I have a home zinc plating kit, so I have plated all the bolts. I personally do not believe the originals were zinc plated based on the unrestored original ones I have seen. However, the 67 guide says they were zinc plated, so that is what I did.

My graphic source was actually the silk screen master that I got with the silk screening kit (picture attached). I scanned it and sent it to the company that made the transfer which is also pictured below. I instructed them that the green background should be eliminated and the yellow image should be white. I had an original unrestored canister with much of the decal still intact and the transfer I have was very close to the original. Also a picture of one I finished with the transfer.

Don, my initial idea was to produce the ink transfers and sell them individually to be applied by the canister owner. As I began to work with them I came to realize that unless very specific steps are taken in the prep and application the results were less than what I would expect. Having done several applications now I can do them with very few mishaps. I guess if someone wanted to "go it alone" I would consider that.
