Here's where I left off, some time ago. My molds are ready but it's much more difficult than one might think, reproducing them!- Top

Re: Wheel weights
I note that this entire thread is focused on 'lead' wheel weights at least up to the point the picture above was posted. I guess that understandable as so few cars, in '67 at least, had aluminum bolt on wheels. I always assumed the "AL" on the '67 bolt on wheel weights stood for aluminum but reading the posts in this thread make me wonder if the "AL" is yet another manufacturer of wheel weights. Can someone clarify this? And here's my real question: Finding AL or aluminum wheel weights is impossible...at least I've had no luck...is anyone making them or have some or know where I can find AL aluminum weights for my set of five '67 bolt on wheels? Hoping/dreaming. Wayne- Top

Re: Wheel weights
Years ago, I did a little research on 'AL' weights... my memoryz cloudy, but I thought the 'AL' indicated they were for ALLOY wheels.
I seriously doubt the size of a 2-OZ lead weight, would be similar to the size of a 2-OZ aluminum weight... doesn't make sense.
And I semi-recall that there may have been a coating on the 'AL' weights, so they wouldn't mare/stain the alloy wheels.
Just something to possibly consider... then again, I can't recall what I had for breakfast.
UPDATE- Found a 2002 BADA catalog... wrong time period, but perhapz this excerpt is still a good 'AL' example:

Re: Wheel weights
Gary- We need to think back 60+ years ago... current terminology and the influx of alloy wheels in regular production, will change catalogs.
The frontal image of the wheel weight on the left of the 2002 catalog (not the cross section), seemz to mimic the look for C2 alloy weights.
(that was the main intent for the inclusion of that image... along with the necessary 'coating' aspect)
No problem disagreeing on my theory for what 'AL' stands for... but do you also believe the weight itself, was made from aluminum?- Top

Re: Wheel weights
A little common sense might be necessary here. Think of the size of a wheel weight and how big it would have to be if it were to be made of aluminum. The materials used in wheel weights has changed, older weights used to be made using the best lead available. Then in order to reduce costs, additional materials were added to the lead.
I too, cannot answer 100% what AL stands for but there are no other weights embossed specifically for the type of wheel to be used. The embossed letters are always the companies name and size of weight- Top

Re: Wheel weights
FYI- Just did a little more research, and found out that Cascade Wheel Weights acquired the machinery and technology from BADA.
I called the company and spoke with someone regarding the history of 'AL' weights... they were well aware of the product.
They confirmed it was indeed an old BADA manufactured item, and the 'AL' indicated they were for ALLOY wheels.- Top
