1963 340HP Harmonic Balancer Rubbing Timing Chain Cover

While car was on a lift at the shop, discovered the harmonic balancer appears to be rubbing the timing chain cover. The harmonic balancer is the correct original. Motor was rebuilt in the late '80's with probably less than 500 miles on it since then. As far as I know, the harmonic balancer has never been removed since. Any thoughts how that can be making contact other than it was "hammered" in at the rebuild or was done at one of the previous shop visits?

    Thanks in Advance,

    Fred

I think what you’ll find is the rubber is working its way out from damper. I have seen it before. Don’t know of a simple way to fix other than remove and access,if not that bad maybe you can cut with a razor blade.

Great - I've not removed one before so not sure what level of difficulty there will be, especially getting it back on correctly for timing tab purposes. will have to do a little research on that one. I think I will send it to DamperDudes to be rebuilt if it has to be removed.

      Thanks for the info.

Since I do not have the correct equipment and do not want to drill into the crank to re-install (as some have suggested is more secure), I will let the shop handle this one.

The 340/360 HP crankshafts have a drilled/tapped nose and a center bolt. With the right kind of puller it should come off without much problem, and you install it with the center bolt.

For an alternate method to install a balancer you can make a installation stud. See the DoRD Sticky, under "Engine Rebuild".....

Great document! I wasn't aware of the water pump hub spacer.

You can just purchase a balancer install kit - about $20.

                  Or a remove/install kit - about $90.

                  Google is your friend.

You risk of stripping crankshaft threads if you just use balancer bolt to install.
