    1963 AM Radio Repair

Several prevous threads on this for sources but Jerry Sudeck (spelling?) has retired from Electro-Design/Turnswitch and their site says they no longer repair radios; Gary Tayman @ Tayman Electronics said he no longer repairs, just does conversions (to FM, Bluetooth, etc.). Does anyone have other sources that they have had good experience with? I can check with DMS or Clocks by Roger but thought I would reach out first.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Fred

Has anyone heard if the conversion to AM/FM is counted off in judging? Gary Tayman says you can't tell by looking at the front of the radio and when I have judged in the distant past, I never checked behind the radio (if the wiring is even different). If I go to the FM conversion, I may have to get an updated speaker which I do not want to hassle with.
          Thanks,
          Fred

            Fred,

FYI - AM/FM radios were delivered in 1963 Corvettes made after Feb 1st or thereabouts.

While the JM says AM-only up until "around VIN 12,000" (I have a late March car that is under VIN 12,000), I agree that there is that gray area timeline that one cannot definitely say exactly when they switched over. Having a March car is a pain - lots of changes around VIN's in the 11,000 range. Since it originally came with an AM, that's probably what I will stick with. Lots of talk shows .

              Thanks,
              Fred

Correct. It was found in the silver Z06. VIN in the 9400 range if I recall correctly. Found factory paperwork to confirm.

Wow - thanks for the documentation (Gary, how did you find the letter?) and photos. If I can find an original AM/FM, does anyone know if it will require a different speaker?

                        Thanks,
                        Fred

Fred, if you have the 1963 AIM, there are a few items to check:
                          1. Compare the speaker part number in the AM section to the AM/FM section
                          2. Compare the antenna cable part numbers, think the AM and the AM/FM were different
                          3. Compare the hardware in the rear for the antenna mount, brackets, ground straps, etc
                          4. I know the AM cars had a steel fender support and the AM/FM radios had an aluminum fender support. The steel support left a rust stain on the fiberglass and the aluminum support left a dark shadow on the fiberglass.

You are correct - I forgot about the antenna. For no more than I am going to drive it, and to keep it as it came from factory, I'm sticking with the AM. Thanks for the reminder Harry.
