According to my information, the PF-46 is still available under GM #12731172. However, I suppose it is possible that it has now very recently been replaced by the PF-46E, GM #12737094. Both of these filters had been available for quite some time. The only difference between the PF-46 and PF-46 E is that the PF-46 has the base plate directly tapped for the oil filter connector fitting while the PF-46E has a threaded insert in the base plate for the fitting.

Supposedly, the threaded insert is used to make the filter more recyclable. However, I fail to understand how it changes recycling potential from the direct tapping design. This same "threaded insert" design is being phased into a lot of other AC filter part numbers. Personally, I do not like it and avoid it, if possible, when I buy oil filters. To me, it just represents another possible failure point which is eliminated with the direct tapping design.

I didn't know the PF 46E had that threaded insert. I'd be curious to see some closeup images of it, if someone has one handy.

Rich...... Edit. I found one online. Hard to see the Bypass Valve though. Is there one?

PF-46 or PF-46E has no bypass valve. Either do have an anti-drainback valve, though. PF-48 or PF-48E do have both valves

Joe, Thanks for clearing that up. Sorry I never replied back to your post.

For future reference, it's a drainback vs bypass valve.
