    Factory installed PF46 oil filter

Does anyone have an original factory-installed PF-46 oil filter?

There is no picture of one in the new judging guide, just the PF-48, and I have one of those. See below for the JG copy.
I suspect that the PF-46 label is similar but would like to see one to confirm.

Thanks for any assistance that you can provide.

Re: Factory installed PF46 oil filter

    Patrick,
We have not seen an original PF46 as of yet.
Based on original C5 and C6 oil filters that we have been seen, we believe the label would appear the same as the photo. (red white black bar code)

Until we see an actual one though, we are presuming.

A service replacement PF46 or 46E would warrant the same deduction as specified in the TIMJG.

From a 2006, base car with Z51. Car Build 0206

      On the bottom.... 03961 OE

I do not believe this was available in service with this label.

                Excellent!

Looks like Pete can add these to the manual as well.
The label looks a lot like the previous LS1 factory-installed PF44, but with a different number.

I don't think that they had a red upper half until the PF48.

Re: Factory installed PF46 oil filter

Prior to the Florida Melbourne Regional, I was looking on EBAY for an "original" PF46 filter for my 2006. I came upon two NOS ones listed, and bought them. They were ~$12.00 each with free shipping.

However, when I got them, in what appear to be original old AC Delco boxes, they were not "correct". The diameter of the filters was much greater than the original filter diameter.

I spoke with Pete about these, and to the best of my recollection, we couldn't figure out the origin of these PF46's. I still don't know what they are or what they fit, or why they're labelled PF46.

                    Any comments on this mystery?

Re: Factory installed PF46 oil filter

Chuck, I also did the exact same thing before the Regional. I bought the identical filter from another Ebay listing.

It was hard to see the actual diameter but I took a chance. It was too large. I looked up the part#, it listed it for a 1977 Pontiac Ventura 4.9L.

Then I did it again. I bought 2 other NOS PF46's from another seller. Those were correct diameter.

I pulled off my brand new PF48 that I got from my GM dealer, and went to install it.

It wouldn't screw on. The thread diameter was too small !

Then I realized that the GM Part numbers were the key. I looked them up and discovered that PF46 was used for several make & models oofother GM vehicles, but not Corvette. I could not understand why they would have the same generic PF number associated with several different part numbers.

I have some notes, measurements and photos I'll add later.

The 88984215 (posted PF46 by Harry and Don), is still shown in the GM parts references.

                        Dimensions: 3.7 x 3.4 x 3.3 inches

But it does not include the part# 12690386 in my previous post as the present replacement.

I have a headache now. How can something designed to be so simple, be so complicated.

Harry, My reference says "Discontinued" but a note saying it cannot verify 2006 fitment.

                            Dimensions: 3.8 x 3.5 x 3.3 inches (Note this is slightly different from the present replacement which is 3.8 x 3.4 x 3.3 inches)

However, None of the specifications describe the thread size of the filters. I have 2 PF46's that won't thread onto my '07 in the shop. I'll go get some measurements.

Interesting. I just purchased one of those "vintage" PF46s off eBay but it hasn't arrived yet.

As noted, it's baffling to think GM would have assigned the name "PF46" to two very different filters.
