In studying battery use in 78/79 for the revision of the TIMJG, I've concluded that two heavy-duty batteries were called out and their usage extended into 1980. Then the Freedom Battery IIs were introduced. I used a Delco Electronics Products catalog dated Sep 79 that helped with cold cranking amp assignments.
I also referred back to buildsheets to see what model was called out. Prior to 78, buildsheets called out the battery model 87-5 or even earlier the R series. But in 78, a three-digit code is used, referenced no where but on the AIM. Data processing typically use the last three-digits of the VIN as the code on a buildsheet.
Well, interesting enough, until I figured code usage on the buildsheet, did I understand the three-digit code on 79 battereries...the label listed the three-digit code. At the bottom of the label is listed a recommended replacement battery. Back to the two UA1 heavy-duty batteries, both of which saw usage in both years. The attached two-page PDF shows the progress for the revision listing both 78 model numbers, and their companion batteries in 79 with the three-digit code. Also shown is cranking amps. I have access two original 79 batteries; their owners contributors to the topic. Additional owners of original 78/79 batteries are welcomed to join in.
What I am seeking is a source that can verify the CCA for a 527 battery, whose replacement is the 89-60. The 89-60 is listed in the Delco Elec Products catalog with 505 CCA. Note I skipped battery size that seemed critical in battery discussion threads a decade ago. I figured that standard battery deductions kept judges out of the battery compartment with their rulers! LOL
