65 Hood Release Handle - set screw

I'm going to assume that this ugly screw is not original. What there a set screw instead? Please advise, and thank you in advance.

This is gonna be interesting! Answer is there was NO set screw. The handle was pressed on the shaft. I"m sure that repo handles had some kind of screw! Lets just see what the repo"s can come up with!

This car was not driving since 1983; therefore, there was not repo's then. It must have been a shade tree fix. lol. Maybe JB weld will keep it on there, instead of the screw.

I've seen many with some type of screw to hold the handle on after it pulled off. My method to repair is to drill, tap and install a shallow set screw and then fill both outer ends with JB weld and repaint the handle if its still good. Makes a permanent invisible repair that appears original.

On my 63 the wire broke just above the handle. I ground it down even with the handle. Then drilled it out. I used the same gauge piano wire and used JB Weld to set it in place. I cut the wire too long on purpose. After I installed it in the car, I trimmed the wire to the proper length. It has been fine for the last 12 years.
