63 horn wires

Hey guys,

I have a mostly original 63 coupe for reference and am restoring another 63 coupe for NCRS judging. I am questioning the wire colors for the horn contact, they both have green coming from the horn button, but a black with the connector on the lower section of the column. Is this correct? If so, how would this have been connected at the factory? The driver car I have is just twisted together with black electrical tape over the connection, doesn't seem like the factory would have done that in my opinion. Has this been modified on both cars I have by chance? Any help would be appreciated.

Todd, the factory would not have done that. As far as I know all original wire for the horn from the upper bearing to the connection was black. Additionally the connection was a quick plug.

I've attached four pictures from a Chevy replacement kit. Amazing as to what it says. Additionally, the wire in the kit is green.

So what is the fix. Take the Chevy kit, cut off the bottom connector, use a black magic marker and color the wire black, attach the correct connector, then install the new part.

Todd ,what month of 63 do you have on very early cars , i show from horn button wire at the wheel is Tan to fuse connector, then fuse box to relay is still tan, both horn units are both black wire.

Todd, I'll second Danny's info. The wire coming from the steering column should be tan. Plugging into the tan lead heading out to the Horn Relay.

Thanks Danny, I am a little confused by your last statement that " both horn units are both black wire." Could you clarify please?

Everything else sounds like it should be tan?

Todd, follow your engine harness from the fire wall plug going along the right side inner fender toward the radiator support, there a black wire that split with 2 connector wire for each horn , look at the photos yellow arrow on top pointing at the black wire that goes over support down with 2 frame clips and 2 connectors for each horn the Tan wire is part of the same harness but it connect to the relaythumbnail (2)_inPixio.jpgthumbnail.jpg

That makes sense Danny, I think the harness I have is good from the firewall foreward, it is the one for the horn button that I am questioning. I appreciate the detailed pictures.

Maybe you have a horn button from a later year Todd

They both appear to be replacements. Oct. 19th and Dec. 4th of 1962 are the build dates.
