    69 Power Steering Pump Installation

I'm ready to install a new PS pump in my L36 with A/C. I'm wondering if it's necessary (easier) to install the "cradle" bracket on the pump before attaching the bracket to the engine. Currently I have the bracket loosely bolted in place.

One of the bolts that holds the pump to the bracket goes between the pump pulley and the bracket. The pulley is already on the pump. I removed the original pump so long ago I don't remember the sequence. I've attached a drawing that I hope will illustrate what I'm addressing. You'll see other brackets related to the pump and alternator that should be installable after the pump is actually in place. Not shown in this drawing is the idler wheel and related parts that further crowd the area and interfere with access.

    Suggestions will be appreciated.

No replies, but in case anyone else comes across this issue, I was able to install the pump after attaching the bracket to the pump first. A bit of a challenge having to deal with the long bolt and spacer that holds the idler wheel to the same bracket and engine block (not shown in the drawing). More brackets/braces to go relating to the pump and alternator. I'll tackle the hoses, PS valve and cylinder next. Then...

I did this with my '70 454, which has a similar set up as your car. On my car the PS pulley is a spoked cast iron design so the bolt is installed through/between the spokes. I installed the bracket first then the pump, but your way may be easier.

Mark, I have the same pulley design, but apparently your fingers are more nimble than mine. I couldn't get the lower bolt started while reaching down into the mounting area.

ALL Corvette big blocks with power steering used the same cast iron power steering pump pulley.
