Hello,
I am a new member to NCRS.
History: I currently own what was my Grandfathers (Russ Cook) '63 fuelie coupe. He restored the car in '84. He left it to me in '05 after he passed. About 2 years ago the car began running pretty cruddy. Hesitating on acceleration, surging at a constant rpm, vapor locking during hot starts. After talking with a few enthusiasts, I decided to try running AV gas. This helped quite a bit and ran a bit smoother, but still had most symptoms although the vapor lock stopped. About a year ago, it developed a severe fuel leak out of the bottom of the fuel meter. Likely from years of old ethanol gas use and sitting for long periods of time. This forced me to do a rebuild of the FI, which I was dreading but knew that time would come. With some great advice and wisdom from a gentleman in Pennsylvania, and getting my 16 year old son off the computer, we made it a father son project. We also performed a valve adjustment.
It went fairly smooth and the car fired right up. Running better than it ever had since I owned it!
Currently its still running pretty good. It still has what I refer to as surging. While at a constant throttle and no load, the rpm fluctuates up and down. Running smoother at the higher point and rougher at the lower point. When I accelerate it really runs smooth at about 3,000 rpm and up. Could this be a detonating/timing problem?
The other issue that very recently came up and is more concerning to me is a tinny squeal that seems to be coming from the top end of the distributor. Very noticeable at idle, but hard to pinpoint. I have disconnected the tack cable and it still exists. I checked and greased the FI pump drive cable as well. Mt next thought is to pull the distributor to check the gears at the bottom half.
Does anyone out there have any similar experiences with either of these issues? Any advice is well appreciated!
Also, does anyone know of any trusted, experienced mechanics in the Seattle area that you would trust and might help with diagnosing these issues?? Oh, I also have a video of this sound. Attaching and sending it in this thread might take me some time though!
Thanks for your time!
