My correct (according to the JM) 7# cap is leaking. In talking to some fellow members in our chapter, they asked if it was a passenger car cap since there is a difference in the height of the gasket to cap (Corvette taller). Is this true or is my cap just defective? Thanks.

Re: 1957 radiator cap
Hard to say why you are encountering this problem. After 60 plus years obviously something has changed either the copper radiator or the off shore cap. If possible I would suggest you read Dr. Ed Gurdjian's well researched (as always) article in Volume 5 #4 on radiator caps from 1956 through 1965. From that article GM Assembly preferred Eaton cap 3708173 from 1956 through 1960.- Top

Re: 1957 radiator cap
My 1957 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Mar. 1957) lists GM # 850795 (RC-1, 7#) as the radiator cap for the following:
54-57 PASS.
55-57 CORV. 8 cyl.
55-57 COMM., UTIL.
I have a NORS 850795 (RC 1, 7#) cap in an AC box dated June 1988 but the cap has the "small ears" that measure 1.0" thick.
I also have a NOS GM # 850797 RC-3, 7# cap in a very old AC box with the "large ear" that is stamped "TURN TIGHT", "REMOVE SLOWLY" , "AC", "MADE IN USA", "PATD." and "13" over "7#" that measures 1.25" thick.
I also have a NOS GM # 861123 RC-18, 10# cap in a very old AC box with the "large ear" that is stamped "TURN TIGHT", "REMOVE SLOWLY" , "AC", "MADE IN USA", "PATD.", "RC-18" and "10#" that measures 1.0" thick.
