    65 L79 Distributor Cap

I'm looking to get the CORRECT distributor cap for my 1965 L79 engine.
I see vendors offering D308 and D309, AFAIK the D309 has gold contacts.
Which cap is the correct one for my engine, from an appearance and judging perspective?

    Murray------

Your application originally used a Delco D308, GM #1932018 distributor cap. This cap was black alkyd material and had aluminum contacts. There was no "R" script on the top of the cap. I believe originals had "patent pending" script.

By the way, the D309 caps did not have gold contacts; they were copper.

K&B made the best reproduction cap. Paragon bought them and I believe they sell the K&B repro cap. See pics below of the K&B cap. Note the reinforcement ridge marked in red...judges look for this. Very nice piece.

In normal judging there is no way the judges can determine the material of the distributor contacts. We do not normally ask the owner to remove the cap or wires.

I had a judge at the regionals tell me the ridge on the repro is different (smaller) than a original -1point

              Re: 65 L79 Distributor Cap

All Original Delco Remy Distributor Caps from the Patent Pending era have the 1/2 round reinforcing rib at the top of the Window. There are several differences between original Delco Caps and the reproductions including NTP Fonts at the embossments.

The K&B/Paragon cap has the reinforcement rib at the cap, as well. I'm not saying this cap is an EXACT copy of the original, but it's the absolute best that's currently available.

Other reproduction caps I have seen lack that detail so it look like they are improving their product. As mentioned here there are many differences when compared to originals. Biggest one to me is the off shore quality of an important ignition part.

                    Dave,
I don't want to belabor the point but just to be informative...this distributor cap (K&B) is manufactured in the USA. The same cap is sold by Zip and Paragon.

Murray. I have an NOS 308 cap in the original box if you are interested. I bought it at Carlisle two years ago. Message me if you are interested. My 65 FI doesn't use the 308. Tony 👍

Thanks Tony for the offer but I have already made a purchase of (I believe, according to the comments above) to be a D308 cap in the original box.
