Re: Why a gas leak now?
It was not leaking from the two nuts as they were snug.
After removing the gas and drying the area, the lock ring came off with no effort. The gasket was flat, pancake like. Both parts were GM parts.
Some rust on the bottom inside of the sending unit (water in tank I imagine). Removed the rust and installed a new filter.
A small piece of insulation broke off, any suggestions on what to cover that with, see picture.
The new gasket is soaking in oil, just need to visit NAPA and get a new gas line.
Cheers

Re: Why a gas leak now?
If it's dry tomorrow, I'll power it up for a gas reading. OHM's were good on the sending unit.

Re: Why a gas leak now?
All done. all was dry this morning. Powered up the car, gas gauge was fine, filled with gas and gauge was still file.
Summary, it was the sending unit grommet. Over time it shrunk and that caused the leak.
I'll keep the tire tub out and do some fiberglass repair over the winter.
