i had a leak on my 65 20 years ago tried at least 5 times using LI corvette and GM i finally coated the ring and O ring with wheel bearing grease no more leak. I have done 2 or 3 more over the years the same way.

It was not leaking from the two nuts as they were snug.

After removing the gas and drying the area, the lock ring came off with no effort. The gasket was flat, pancake like. Both parts were GM parts.
Some rust on the bottom inside of the sending unit (water in tank I imagine). Removed the rust and installed a new filter.

A small piece of insulation broke off, any suggestions on what to cover that with, see picture.

The new gasket is soaking in oil, just need to visit NAPA and get a new gas line.

        Cheers

          Fuel resistant RTV?
Heat shrink tubing if you could get one end disconnected? Not sure if ithey make a fuel resistant type.

          Just my thoughts.

I used a product called Seal-All from ACE. attached the insulation to the sender. Then, replaced the ground spade as the wire was cracked, wrapped the 3 wire harness in harness tape, installed a new gas line, installed the sender, grommet and locking ring. Did a quality check and dumped in 4 gallons of gas. It's up on the lift and dry.

If it's dry tomorrow, I'll power it up for a gas reading. OHM's were good on the sending unit.

All done. all was dry this morning. Powered up the car, gas gauge was fine, filled with gas and gauge was still file.

Summary, it was the sending unit grommet. Over time it shrunk and that caused the leak.

I'll keep the tire tub out and do some fiberglass repair over the winter.
