    Why a gas leak now?

Just put 20 gallons in the tank to store the car for the winter. I start it every two weeks to cycle the R12.

I smelled gas, so today I pulled the tire tub.. It's leaking from the sending unit gasket!

Did you use an NOS GM gasket or a current "reproduction"? Some, if not all, of the current gaskets have a slightly smaller cross section and, apparently, have been found to be problematic as far as sealing goes.

By the way, I THINK the reason that the reproduction gaskets have a slightly smaller cross section is that this was done to address the difficulty installing the cam lock with the original gasket. If so, they succeeded in accomplishing that but.......

      Why now?
Because you probably have 100 other things you need to be doing right now, and there is no better time than right after you have filled the tank.

Joe, what is there was in the car when I bought the car 11 years ago. All will be replaced with an NOS gasket and lock ring.

        Thanks

Last year I bought a sending unit gasket for my '65 from Doc Rebuild before he went off the deep end. What I received was definitely larger in diameter than the repro from then LIC. It fit fine using the two hour oil pre-soak per the AIM, installing it with a new NOS cam locking ring and the cam lock tool I bought from LIC.

Dr. Rebuild is now out of stock on those.

I just installed one in the 63 with a gasket obtained from Paragon.
It was definitely thick, and took some effort to install. So, whoever supplies theirs likely has the sizing correct.

Hello Harry, disconnect the two wire connectors from the posts and see if the posts have nuts or are riveted. If you have the original threaded studs with nuts, check if the nuts are loose. I just had the same issue with my 1966. Tightened the nuts and problem solved.

                          Good suggestion, first thing tomorrow.
