Thanks Jeff. Perhaps I haven't gotten the threads clean enough as I did not use a thread chaser but I have cleaned them and used the ARP thread sealer. When you had this issue was there any evidence of oil on the bolts? I've pulled the bolts several times and I don't really see any oil. Perhaps because it's vapor as you say so it does nos go, t readily show.

The bolts and threads in the head have to be SCRUPULOUSLY clean for the sealer to work. As far as the threads in the heads go, it can be very difficult to achieve this with the intake manifold on the engine. After running a tap through the threads, I recommend using a gun barrel cleaning mop soaked with brake cleaner through the threads several times until the mop comes out clean.

Thanks Joe. I'll give it another go with the thread chaser Jeff recommended and your recommendation of using a gun barrel cleaning mop.

Any opinion on whether I should be seeing evidence of oil on the removed bolts if the source of the oil is indeed those bolt holes? As I said, I've removed them several times, and the ARP thread sealer I had already applied appears oil free.

        .
All I can tell you is that this problem can be very stubborn, even if the threads are completely free of oil. I think part of the problem is that these bolts are very close to the exhaust crossover passage. Therefore, this area gets VERY hot. I think the heat may break down just about any sealant that is used.

I have a 67 327/300 with the same condition, small amount of engine oil accumulating in the center of the intake manifold. My question is exactly where on the intake bolts do you apply the bead of sealer? I assume you do not want any sealer at the very end of the bolt knowing that it is exposed to the valley inside the engine. I am wondering how far up from the bottom of the bolt should the sealer be applied? Thanks. Tom

I put it on the lower 1/2"(+/-) of the bolt. I run my finger around the threads to push it into the roots of the thread and to even out the sealant all the way around. Unless you leave a dollop on the very end of the bolt, all that is on the threads will be pushed upwards toward the bolt's head as it's threaded in.

(Make sure the bolts are dry and clean of all oil before applying sealant - I use a shot of brake clean and paper towels.)
