Re: P01 vs P02
Are the steel rings on the back side cap the same on P01 & 2?
Mid 60s up into 72,3ish IMO is another automotive mile stone. Never again will you see hubcaps with cast pieces screwed into stainless rims that weigh 10lbs ea. 10 on the cool scale. edit>(actually 7-8lbs)<
I had quite a cap collection before I could drive. 300ish Most found on the road side in the vicinity of a pot hole. Some amazing engineering art!
I shop for cool hubcaps as wall art. Chrysler had some beautiful caps. 66-7 Charger, 69 Barracuda, 69-70 LTDs to mention a few.
P01 &2 are on that list...for a car not art. though I wouldn't mind hanging one up either.Last edited by David M.; May 13, 2024, 10:50 PM.- Top

The whitewalls were on the car when I bought it last May. They came from Coker Tire, here's the link.

Re: P01 vs P02
Hi All,
I went through this thread and corrected/edited some inaccurate info(from me).
In the last 2 years I've amassed quite a few of these finned turbine starburst sunburst caps from all makes, Ford, Chrysler, GM et al. Spinners and wire caps too. (definitely a diagnosed sickness).
I have ~3 dozen GMs, 15" Buick and Corvette, and a few of the 14."
Some NOS. Some early take offs, some nicely restored. I've learned how smooth out most dents and rash. Apply the black paint with the right sheen etc. Even got a hold of NOS center caps.
I can remove/replace old worn cracked faded cross flag medallions.
BUT I still don't know for 100% accuracy... Is the 1st picture in the first post in this thread chain an accurate picture of a PO1?
Blair Kaytar's picture of 5ea PO1s is too far away to see the details.
Can anyone provide me with good close ups of PO1s?
I need to see the details of the center cap, the fins and what the short fin looks like at the valve stem hole.
Part numbers would be helpful for the cast fins and center caps so I can confirm fakes from the real McCoy.
I believe the outer stainless rim is the same as PO2s?
There's a set of alleged "PO1s" for sale locally. But I think hes absolutely wrong they are definitely PO2s. The fins are squared off and the center cap is flush with the squared off fins...That to me = PO2.

Re: P01 vs P02
I also have question about the P02 for a correct restoration.
As far as I know the fins are black on the sides, but in the center on the area between the fins the surface is bare.
How was it painted from the factory? additionally what is the best way to reproduce this scheme?

Re: P01 vs P02
I believe its argent silver at the top of the cast fin area up to the center cap, (I call it the cone area).
Its definitely not bare cast. GM wanted some protection there. They learned from the Olds N93 and Riviera M9 RPO wheel covers that bare cast is not favorable. At least that's what I'm interrupting from the NOS PO2 I have.
There's a technique to getting the black and silver on right. If done wrong it stands out.
In the pics of one of my NOS PO2s you can see the definition line between the black and sliver.
Anyone know who manufactured these caps for GM... KH?- Top
