Maybe the Thermostat, sending unit or bad gauge! Just a few off hand thoughts!

Have you verified the temperature with an IR gun?

For an "in the ball park" check, Harbor Freight sells in IR gun for $29 which would allow you to compare upper and lower radiator. I chased an overheating 66 until my HF IR gun proved that my radiator was not up to speed.

          Round up the usual suspects:

          1. Spark advance map (VAC and initial timing)

          2. Fan clutch

          3. Radiator deposits that reduce heat transfer.

          Less likely, but still possible:

          4. Thermostat malfunctioning

          5. Incorrect or corroded water pump impeller that reduces coolant circulation rate.

          6. No spring in the lower radiator hose that prevents it from collapsing and blocking flow.

            Roger,

            Ditto everything everyone's said.

Did you remove the thermostat and fill the block with coolant, replace and then fill the radiator to make sure that the block and radiator were full of antifreeze with no void.

Best thermostat to use is a Robert Shaw. If you don't have one, recommend you get one.
