    1972 LT-1 fuel pump questions

My 72 has its original fuel pump, lines and hoses and I saw that one of our esteemed Judges, Herr Hulst, lost his fuel pump prior to the Indiana Regional and I got to thinking that I don't have a suitable fix in the event (when?) my pump goes south. A search here tells me that a service replacement is the 40709 but it is clocked differently. Ebay show zero 40956 pumps as does an internet search. Oth, ebay is chock full of 40709 pumps but I don't know which are made up, authentic, aftermarket repros or ...? So, if the 40709 is a service replacement but the clocking of the outlet is different how is this solved in a replacement? Then I saw the discussion of "S" hose versus non-S hose. Does the hose work for both applications or how is this solved? I have seen references to Airtex (sp?) but I have zero knowledge of them. Input?

So, where does one turn to for a parts-shelf replacement for a fuel pump for a 72 LT-1 and does the S hose care about its clocking, as in, is there enough movement left in the rubber from the hard line to pump?

    Looking for input

    Thank you as always

I cannot find that the AC 40956 was ever available in SERVICE. It's possible that it was but, if so, it would have been available through Delco and not the regular GM parts system. Through GM the only fuel pump available in SERVICE for 1970-72 LT-1 was the GM #6470110, aka AC 40709.

You are correct that the angularity of the inlet nipple of the 40956 and 40709 is different. In fact, I believe this is the only difference between the two fuel pumps. I do not think the "S" hose will solve an installation problem as I don't think it will work for 1970-71 LT-1's that originally used the 40709. However, as I mentioned in another recent post on this subject I believe that the use of a non-molded, heavy wall fuel hose will work just fine.

Joe, thank you for confirming and clarifying the pump issue. Keith, again, thank you for the information on the fuel hose. If the local parts store has fuel lines why did you go to CC? I am just curious.

Does anyone have experience with the ebay 40709 pumps that seem to be plentiful?

        Thank you as always.

A lot of the fuel hose I've seen at local parts stores is the thinner wall variety. It's easy to identify this type because the reinforcing cord can be prominently seen. This type will kink if anything approaching a sharp bend in the routing is required. The heavy wall tubing is larger in OD and very little or none of the outline of the reinforcing cord can be seen.

            Perfect explanation. Thank you.

Any readers out there with experience on these eBay 40709 pumps? I don't expect a failed pump but then who does? Boy Scout motto "be prepared" I guess.
