    NCRS Pre-Judging Advice

Hello everyone. I'm a new NCRS member and am seeking certification of a '63 fuelie. I think it is close but in reviewing the judging manual and threads on this board, I recognize the fine details matter - a lot!

Does anyone know of any pre-judging inspection services and/or ongoing consulting services that could help me through the process? I live on the west side of Michigan near Grand Rapids. I'm excited dig in and want to do most of the work myself if possible.

Appreciate any feedback you may have. Thanks!

    Where west of GR?

Honestly I'd recommend signing up for the Chapter judging meet which happens in a month over in Dearborn. You'll pay less for that full judging than for most independent inspections.

Thomas, looks like you joined NCRS yesterday 5/1/2022. I agree with Patrick, join the local chapter and start there.

The Judging Reference Manual is also good to have. The C2 63/64 Judging Sheets are available on this website, print them out for a review. Become familiar with CDCIF as part of originality Judging and the other component Condition. The terminology is a learning curve by itself.

        Good Luck

An obvious big deduction will be the tires and wheels. Do you have original wheels/hubcaps/bias-ply tires?

Most of your questions can be answered by studying the Judging Guide.

Thanks! Yes, I recently purchased a set of take off hubcaps and Kelsey steel wheels. Just placed a tire order with Coker today so I should have that wrapped up in a week or so. Once they go to balance the wheels I'll know what weights to purchase and put on myself.

One other major wrinkle, it's a Riverside Red car so I thought I would wrap up everything except the paint and deal with that later. Assuming I have no choice but to paint it if Top Flight status is no the horizon? The judging manual seems clear that if it is painted the wrong color, it's a full deduction.

This may sound like a funny question, but is it driveable?

Full deduction for paint only. As suggested, download the Judging Sheets to get a look at the points associated with various items. It will help you make an informed decision on the $$$ associated with making "required" changes to your car - you might decide to just leave certain things as they are.

You would start out with a 170 point deduction for paint and color. So you begin judging with a 96.2 or so. Top Flight takes a 94. So as long as you don't lose too many more points, it is possible.

                    Thomas

Having your car judged at Chapter level FIRST is good advice.

In addition to a copy of the 1964-64 Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide (What to Judge), you should get a few other references.

You need a copy of the "JRM" or "Judging Reference Manual" (How to Judge).

You also need some "Judging Reference Cards". Specifically, Standard Deduction Guidelines 2022, Body Color and Paint Flow Guidelines 2019, and CDCIF and Condition Guidelines also 2019. All the above are available at NCRS Store link above or give David King (Store Manager) a call.

When you get your JRM, READ the "Owner's Advisory" at the front - it will answer many questions.

As to "Paint": Standard Deduction Guideline #10 addresses Body Color. Standard Deduction Guideline #11 addresses Body Paint. When you download those sample judging sheets for exterior, you'll note those are judged separately. Body Color is COLOR, while Body Paint is APPLICATION. Be sure to understand this distinction before you start repainting anything.

                        Thomas,
You have already made two good steps in 1) joining the NCRS, and 2) making this post on the discussion board shortly after buying an iconic Corvette. Each reply you received so far above is all good advice. You will get more out of making it to the Chapter meet than you may learn from any one person unless they spend at least a few days or more looking over your Corvette.

The Michigan Chapter is a great group of people who will make sure you leave knowing a lot more about your Corvette after the meet is over than before you went. Take the advice and encouragement from Patrick and Harry and sign up for that Chapter meet in Dearborn if you can make it.

It looks like you have a very nice '63 SWC, and the Black Challenger next to it!
                        Welcome to the NCRS!
                        Eric

I've never encountered a Trim Tag color variation when judging.
There are no doubt several judges here with more experience, who may have.
I expect that other line items which are body color would also be affected with the "F" portion of CDCIF.
Ex: Cowl and Grilles; Headlight Housing; Body Jambs (Interior section) and perhaps others.
It seems doubtful that a judge could give full Finish credit to any item which should match the body color listed on the Trim Tag, but does not.
So that likely would result in additional point deductions beyond the 170 for Body Color and Body Paint.
